Patrick van Veen
Patrick van Veen (1970) is a behavioural biologist and founder of Apemanagement®. As a speaker, author and curious researcher, he seeks to inspire people and encourage reflection. His mission is to translate scientific insights from biology into practical knowledge that can be applied in organisations, education and society.
Professional experience
Patrick strongly believes that sharing knowledge alone is not enough — you must also remain actively involved in organisations to understand what is truly happening and to continue gaining new insights. After studying biology (Utrecht University), he worked for ten years at a life insurance company, where he discovered how strongly our primate behaviour still influences the workplace. He began recording his observations in notebooks, which eventually led to his first book, Help, Mijn baas is een aap! (Help, My Boss is a Monkey!) (2004). This book has now been reprinted more than 25 times, translated into German and Russian, and became a bestseller in the Netherlands. During his time at the insurance sector, he also took a management course, which laid the foundation for Apemanagement®, which he founded in 2002. Until 2007, he continued to do interim work for various pension funds alongside his work for Apemanagement. Thereafter, he devoted himself entirely to his own company.
Jane Goodall
However, in 2008, he took on a new role when he was asked to join the board of the Jane Goodall Institute Netherlands, volunteering part of his time to work for this organisation. In 2012, he joined the global organisation of the British primatologist Dr Jane Goodall, with whom he maintained a warm personal relationship until her passing in 2025. From 2017 onwards, he had the privilege of leading the Jane Goodall Institute Global for five years as global chair, during which time he regularly visited projects, research teams and chapters abroad. He also regularly represented the Institute at international conferences and visited various countries together with Dr Jane Goodall. He cherishes the lessons he learned from Dr Jane Goodall about intercultural cooperation, nature conservation, chimpanzees and working within large international organisations, lessons he incorporates into his lectures and training programmes. He remains affiliated with the Institute as a senior advisor and advises two chimpanzee sanctuaries in Africa. He considers his more than 15 years of experience within the Institute invaluable in understanding how organisations must operate under challenging circumstances.

Media
Patrick regularly appears in the media as an expert on social behaviour. He is known to the general public for his participation in Married at First Sight and MAFS: Match or Mistake, where he contributed as an expert for eight seasons. He has also appeared as a behavioural biologist in episodes of the science programme Galileo, both in Germany and the Netherlands.
Publications
Following his first book, several others have been published. Writing has become not only his passion but also an important way of sharing knowledge and insights. His latest book, Help! Het is hier een beestenbende (Help! It's a madhouse here), offers a clear perspective on disruptive behaviour and inappropriate behaviour in organisations, and provides practical tools to prevent and address such behaviour.
In addition to his experience as a board member, research plays a central role in Patrick’s continued development and knowledge building. Research generates new insights and often helps to better interpret behaviour. Together with colleagues, he has conducted research into bullying in the classroom and among gorillas, cooperation among chimpanzees, communication, adaptation to change among orangutans, and the distinction between innate and learned behaviour in chimpanzees. Research involving humans, such as team formation and team dynamics, is also central to his work.
Patrick delivers lectures and facilitates sessions in Dutch, English and German.
Apemanagement
Apemanagement was founded in 2002 with a mission reflected in the company’s subtitle: training and consultancy from a different perspective. This was later refined to translating science into knowledge.
However, the core mission has never changed: to inspire and educate people by translating scientific insights from biology into practical knowledge that can be applied in organisations, education and society, enabling people to collaborate more effectively, constructively and socially.
The logo, which has remained unchanged since the beginning, combines the silhouettes of a gorilla and a human, a visual expression of the mission. While the mission has remained largely the same over the past 25 years, the team has expanded. Since 2005, Patrick's partner Daniëlle has been co-owner, and since 2014, Sarah Mutsaers has been responsible for training activities in the Netherlands.
Many Apemanagement training programmes take place in zoos, in collaboration with partners in the Netherlands, Germany and the UK, among others.
In addition to lectures and training courses, research and development are an important part of our work. As a result, Apemanagement has developed unique models and tools that are applied in its training programmes. If you would like to know more about our training courses, visit: www.apemanagement.nl
Jane Goodall Institute
Since 2008, Patrick has been involved with the institute of British primatologist Dr Jane Goodall DBE, incorporating the lessons he has learned from her into his work. Patrick and Apemanagement have been committed to supporting the work of Dr Jane Goodall and the Institute in various ways over the past few years.
The Jane Goodall Institute is internationally committed to the protection and welfare of chimpanzees and their natural habitats. Through its Roots & Shoots youth programme, young people are encouraged to contribute to a better world for animals, people and the environment. Even after Jane's passing in 2025, continuing her work and mission with a message of hope remains the Institute’s primary objective. Patrick is still affiliated with the Institute as a chimpanzee expert, ambassador and chair emeritus.

“Every individual can make a difference” are the words of Dr. Jane that motivate me to dedicate myself to nature, the environment and humanity. "
“She inspired me as a young student, and now it is wonderful to be able to contribute to her institute. It is a privilege to work together with hundreds of employees and volunteers in more than 28 countries to share Jane's message and contribute to her work.”
Sjnoebel Foundation
In 2024, Daniëlle and Patrick established the Sjnoebel Foundation, named after their first cat (1992-1999), a rescue tomcat from an animal shelter. Through this foundation, they provide financial and operational support to organisations dedicated to the long-term care and medical rehabilitation of rescued, surrendered or confiscated animal that have nowhere else to go. Among other contributions, the royalties from the book Help! Het is hier een beestenbende are donated to the Sjnoebel Foundation. Funds are also raised through other initiatives to support these causes. More information about the foundation and the shelters it supports can be found at www.stichtingsjnoebel.nl
